Gena McGowan
Hall Director, Fields Hall

Gena was born in Venezuela, spent her childhood in France, her adolescence in California (B.A. Psychology, University of San Francisco) and her married life first in Portland (M.Ed. Religious Education, University of Portland), where both her children were born, and for 32 years lived in Scottsdale, Arizona (M.C. Counseling, University of Phoenix) where she worked as a pastoral minister in a parish, as a social worker in a homeless shelter, as a professional choir manager, and for the last twelve years as Principal of an inner city elementary parochial school in Phoenix (K-8th grade). Since 1999, she has also maintained a part-time private counseling practice and continues to teach as an adjunct professor at two local institutions of higher learning. At St Matthew Catholic School, she and her husband, Patrick, built up a 67 person student body into a “filled to capacity” dual-language school. Gena was awarded an honorary Doctor in Humane Letters degree by Boston College for her cutting edge work in bringing this model of learning to an inner-city Catholic school. Following her husband’s death, Gena decided to “come home” to Portland to be close to her daughter and her family. She is excited to be returning to pastoral work working with the staff and women of Fields Hall and is looking forward to introducing her granddaughter to campus life.
