Registration Process for New Students in the School of Nursing

For your first term at the University of Portland, all students in the School of Nursing will be registered by the School of Nursing Program Counselor. The nursing curriculum for the first year is a fairly set schedule to best prepare you for completing graduation requirements.

Registration Timeline

Registration & Advising Survey: You will receive an email to your UP email address with a link to the survey. This must be completed by May 10th, 2018.

May 10th Deadline

Send IP, AB, and College Transcripts to UP: Send your scores and transcripts to UP by July 1st. Click here for instructions.

July 1st

Program Counselors Build Schedule: During this time, your schedule is being built and is not finalized. Changes may be made by your Program Counselor at any time.

May 14th - July 31st

Schedule Built: Now that your schedule has been built, you are welcome to email the School of Nursing with any additional questions or concerns you may have about your registration. Any changes made to your schedule after August 1st will be communicated to you via email. Click here for instructions on how to view your schedule.

August 1st

Classes Begin

August 27th

First Week of Classes: Changes can be made to your schedule during this week. The deadline to add or drop classes from your schedule is the Friday of the first week of the semester.

August 27th - 31st

Typical First Semester Class Schedule

First year nursing students are typically registered for 5 courses with 15 credits. Below is a sample nursing schedule. Please note that schedules will vary based on study abroad interest, AP/IB score, transfer credits, etc.

NRS 104 Nursing Professionalism and Practice (3 credits)

NRS 001 First Year Workshop (0 credits)

BIO 205 Foundations of Biology (3 credits) & BIO 005 Foundations of Biology Workshop (0 credits)

PHL 150 Introductory Philosophy (3 credits)

MTH 161 Elementary Statistics (3 credits)

1 Social Science course (3 credits)

For a total of ~15 credits

Classes at UP are offered one, two, three, and sometimes four times a week. Labs or workshops for science courses meet once a week.

  • University Core requirements are a set of courses that all students at the University of Portland must complete.
  • Nursing Major requirements are the courses you need to complete for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Elective courses are any courses you take that do not fulfill any of your Core or Nursing Major requirements.

First Year Workshop: All freshman students are also registered for First Year Workshop (on your schedule, you will see that you are registered for a course numbered NRS 001).This is your First Year Workshop class.
