Registration Process for New Students in the School of Education

For your first term at the University of Portland, all students in the School of Education will be registered by the School of Education Program Counselor.

Registration Timeline

Registration & Advising Survey: You will receive an email to your UP email address with a link to the survey. This must be completed by May 10th.

May 10th Deadline

Phone Interviews: The School of Education will set up an appointment (in person, over the phone or through Zoom) to discuss classes and field experience. This will help the Program Counselor to put together the best first semester schedule for you over the summer based on your interests.

May - June

Send IP, AB, and College Transcripts to UP: Send your scores and transcripts to UP by July 1st. View instructions.

July 1st

Program Counselors Build Schedule: During this time, your schedule is being built and is not finalized. Changes may be made by Program Counselor at any time.

June 1st - July 31st

Schedule Built: Now that your schedule has been built, you are welcome to call or email with any additional questions or concerns you may have about your registration. Please note that schedule changes are only guaranteed for students needing adjustments for: incoming transfer or AP/IB credit, language placements, AES accommodations, or a change in major. Schedule changes based on personal preference are not guaranteed and may not be accommodated due to limited course openings. Any changes made to your schedule after August 1st will be communicated to you via email. Follow instructions on how to view your schedule.

August 1st

Classes Begin: Please note that your class schedule uses the abbreviation R for Thursday. Classes that are held on Tuesday and Thursday will be listed on your schedule as, "TR." 

August 23rd

First Week of Classes: Changes can be made to your schedule during this week. Please note that schedule changes are only guaranteed for students needing adjustments for: incoming transfer or AP/IB credit, language placements, AES accommodations, or a change in major. Schedule changes based on personal preference are not guaranteed and may not be accommodated due to limited course openings. The deadline to add or drop classes from your schedule is the Friday of the first week of the semester.

Typical First Semester Class Schedule

First year education students are generally registered for six courses, totaling 15 credits:

ED 150  - Introduction to Education - 3 credits

ED 001 - Anchor Seminar Workshop - 0 credits

Four other 3-credit courses that include core or other major requirements

First year Classes at UP are offered one, two, three, and sometimes four times a week. Labs for science courses meet once a week for a longer period of time, and are an additional 1 credit.

  • University Core requirements are a set of courses that all students at the University of Portland must complete.
  • Education Major requirements are the courses you need to complete for your specific education program.
  • Elective courses are any courses you take that do not fulfill any of your Core or Education Major requirements.

Anchor Seminar Workshop: All first-year students are also registered for an Anchor Seminar and a corresponding Workshop.
