Registration Process for New Students in the Shiley School of Engineering

For your first term at the University of Portland, all students in the Shiley School of Engineering will be registered by the School of Engineering program counselor. You should plan to meet with the  School of Engineering program counselor about your Spring schedule sometime before the start of Spring semester classes.

Registration Timeline

Send IP, AB, and College Transcripts to UP: Send your scores and transcripts to UP by November 1. View instructions on transferring AP, IB, and college credit to UP.

November 1

Take Math & Language Placement Exams: Engineering students who have not taken college calculus will need to take the math placement exam. Only students interested in studying a foreign language will need to take the language placement exam.

As soon as possible.

Program Counselors Build Schedule: During this time, your schedule is being built and is not finalized. Changes may be made by the Program Counselor at any time throughout this period. The most common adjustments are related to AP/IB or transfer credit. Be sure to reach out to your program counselor for an initial appointment to discuss your schedule.

Schedule is Finalized: Now that your schedule has been built, you are welcome to call the School of Engineering with any additional questions or concerns you may have about your registration. Any changes made to your schedule after this date will be communicated to you via email. View instructions on how to view your schedule.

First Week of Classes: Changes can be made to your schedule during this week. The deadline to add or drop classes from your schedule is Friday of the first week of the semester.

Typical First Semester Class Schedule for Engineering Students

EGR 111 - Engineering Computing w/ Applications

One MATH course:

  • MTH 112 - Pre-Calculus (4 credits)
  • MTH 201 - Calculus I (4 credits)
  • a higher-level math course if you have AP/IB or transfer.

One SCIENCE course:

  • If you are taking MTH 112 (Pre-Calc) or MTH 201 (Calculus I), you will take CHM 207/277 General Chemistry I Lecture & Lab (3 credits & 1 credit). *Starting at MTH 112 may extend your academic plan to 5 years. Check with your Program Counselor for more information.
  • If you are a Computer Science (CS) major you will take CS 203/273 instead of CHM 207/277 
  • If you are taking MTH 202 (Calculus II) or higher (regardless of major), you will take PHY 204/274 General Physics I Lecture & Lab (3 credits & 1 credit)

One Philosophy or Theology Course:

  • PHL 150 - Introductory Philosophy (3 credits)
  • THE 105 - Introduction to Theology (3 credits)

Choose one elective course from one of the University Core categories:

  • Aesthetic Elective, Diversity Elective, Global Elective, Quantitative Literacy Elective or ENG 112 

Total = 16-17 Credits

General Registration Information

Classes at UP are offered one, two, three, and sometimes four times a week. Labs for science courses meet once a week for a longer period of time and are an additional 1 credit.

What should I do if I want to major in Engineering, but was not accepted into the School of Engineering?

If you were not accepted into the School of Engineering upon admission to UP, you may complete a set of pre-requisite courses and apply to transfer into the School of Engineering. For more information about transferring into the School of Engineering, please email the  School of Engineering program counselor.
