About UP: Bauccio Lecture in Entrepreneurship
The Bauccio Lecture in Entrepreneurship was established with a $250,000 Defining Moment Campaign gift from Fedele Bauccio '64,'66 and his wife, Linda. The gift enables the University to stage a series of lectures with visiting entrepreneurs. "How these entrepreneurs became successful and made their dreams happen is as educational as theory learned in the classroom," says Bauccio, who paid his way through school and began his career by working in the cafeteria. He is now CEO of Bon Appetit, an onsite custom restaraunt company which controls all beverage and food at over 170 locations in 26 states and employs more than 8,000 people.
The Bauccio Lecture was established to offer a forum for guest speakers to share ideas and experiences about how new ventures are created and how to nurture a positive, forward-looking, confident "can-do" mind set. A major portion of each lecture is devoted to a spirited question and answer session.
Fedele Bauccio delivered the spring 2003 lecture, "Strategic Branding & Entrepreneurship: A Formula for Tomorrow's Possibilities." Other past Bauccio guest lecturers have included:
- Polar explorer and environmental leader Robert Swan in April 2008;
- Strategic marketing expert and University of Portland regent G. Kelly O’Dea who discussed “The Changing Face of Leadership” in April 2007;
- John Heily, president and CEO of Continental Mills, who presented "Company Culture and Leadership" in February 2006;
- Rev. Robert A. Sirico, co-founder of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, who spoke about the "Entrepreneurial Calling" in November 2004;
- University of Portland regent Gary DeStefano, Nike's President of USA Operations, who delivered the spring 2004 lecture, "From Entrepreneurship to Global: The Nike Story";
- Former WalMart executive Jack Shewmaker, who delivered the fall 2002 lecture, "Corporate Ethics and Personal Values"; and
- Gerry Langeler, a general partner with OVP Venture Partners and co-founder of Mentor Graphics, who delivered the inaugural lecture in March 2001 with a talk titled, "Venture Capital: Back to the Future? Back to Basics? Or Back to the Drawing Board?"
