Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Close-knit and open to all.
UP is a close-knit community that's open to all. It's a place where diversity, equality, and inclusivity are paramount. That translates into continually striving to create an environment where everyone benefits from being exposed to a wide range of ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Because we believe inclusivity is a way of life, we are always looking at enhancing the types of programs, events, and resources offered so as to best embrace our diverse community.
Programs & Resources
Diversity & Inclusion Programming
Guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross, we foster an inclusive environment where all are welcome and every person—regardless of race, religion, gender, orientation, class, age, or disability—is treated with respect and dignity.
Speak UP
We ask members of our community to SPEAK UP and report incidents of observed or experienced interactions of discrimination or harassment.
Diversity & Inclusion Resources
Rooted in our commitment to inclusive excellence, we offer dedicated resources to support our community on The Bluff. While these tools are thoughtfully grouped by focus and community, many remain widely available and applicable to all of our members.
Affinity Groups
Affinity groups are an opportunity for people to connect with others who share salient aspects of their identity. These groups are particularly helpful for historically minoritized and underrepresented individuals to gather in community. Affinity groups, however, are not employee resource groups.
We are so grateful to the staff and faculty who have dedicated their time and energy to establishing and maintaining affinity groups at the University of Portland. The current active groups are listed below.
At the University of Portland, affinity groups are led by faculty and staff on campus so that the programming and engagement remain true to the groups themselves.
Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge the land on which we sit and occupy at the University of Portland. "The Portland Metro area rests on traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River creating communities and summer encampments to harvest and use the plentiful natural resources of the area" (PILR, 2018). We take this opportunity to thank the original caretakers of this land. Read more about Portland's Native diverse and vibrant community.
