The Pilot Battalion

Army ROTC is the largest officer-producing organization within the American military, having commissioned more than half a million second lieutenants since its inception under the National Defense Act of 1916 signed into effect by President Woodrow Wilson.

The name "Pilot Battalion" encompasses 3 ROTC programs under one unit, with the headquarters located at the University of Portland (UP). It was formed in 1996 from the Viking Battalion when the Portland ROTC program was moved to the University of Portland from Portland State University.

Today cadets from the University of Portland, Portland State University, and Eastern Oregon University train together under the Pilot Battalion guidon. The Pilot Battalion mirrors an Army battalion, with cadets holding all leadership and staff positions. The program's cadre train cadets to guide and direct others as future Army leaders.
