About AWM
The University of Portland Department of Mathematics is a departmental member of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). The AWM’s mission is to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences, supporting individuals and institutions as we all work to make a more just and equitable community.
The Association for Women in Mathematics has been encouraging girls and women in the mathematical sciences since 1971. The AWM is a unique organization with over 5,000 members ranging from high school students to retirees. Our annual investment helps to support AWM’s many programs, bringing more girls into mathematics and retaining the women who are already there.

About IBA
The University of Portland is a member of the Intercollegiate Biomathematics Alliance (IBA), a consortium that promotes and fosters research and education in biomathematics. The IBA strives to bring together institutions both academic and non-academic to build a collaborative academic community in the pursuit of advancing biomathematics, ecology, and related areas for researchers, educators of the mathematical and biological sciences, and active scholars. In doing so, the IBA provides a wide range of expertise, resources, and opportunities that are only available when we work together as a community.
The IBA operates within the Center for Collaborative Studies in Mathematical Biology, which proudly sponsors many programs geared towards assisting both established and up-and-coming scholars in the field of mathematical biology.
IBA Supported and/or Sponsored Programs:
- BEAM: Biomathematics Education with Applications and Methods Grant,
- BEER: Biomathematics and Ecology Education and Research Symposium,
- CURE: Cross-institutional Undergraduate Workshop Experience Workshop,
- OUR-BEST: Outstanding Undergraduate Research in Biomathematics Education, Scholarship, and Teaching Prize,
- PEER: Partners in Extending Education and Research,
- IBA-GCP: IBA Graduate Certificate Program,
- TLIB: The Letters in Biomathematics Journal,
- SPORA: Undergraduate Biomathematics Research Journal.
UP faculty and students have access to the combined resources of all of the partnering institutions within the IBA. See the benefits of our IBA membership. Inquiries may also be directed to our UP liaison, Dr. Hannah Highlander, at highland@up.edu. Dr. Highlander also serves on the board of directors of the IBA as the Outreach Coordinator.
About MAA
The University of Portland Department of Mathematics is a departmental member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The MAA is the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students, and enthusiasts. This society seeks to further the understanding of our world through mathematics because mathematics drives society and shapes our lives.
MAA members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; STEM professionals, and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. Learn more about the core values of the MAA.
Our departmental membership includes student membership for an unlimited number of nominated full-time enrolled mathematics students and MAA Membership for one faculty member (who will act as the Departmental Membership Administrator). You can check out the MAA membership page to familiarize yourself with this society and all of the benefits of membership.

About SIAM
The University of Portland Department of Mathematics is a departmental member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). SIAM fosters the development of applied mathematical and computational methodologies needed in various application areas. Applied mathematics, in partnership with computational science, is essential in solving many real-world problems. Through publications, research and community, the mission of SIAM is to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology.
SIAM is an international community of 14,500+ individual members. Almost 500 academic, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting organizations, government, and military organizations worldwide are institutional members. SIAM was incorporated in 1952 as a nonprofit organization to convey useful mathematical knowledge to other professionals who could implement mathematical theory for practical, industrial, or scientific use. Since then, SIAM’s goals have remained the same:
- To advance the application of mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science, and society.
- To promote research that will lead to effective new mathematical and computational methods and techniques for science, engineering, industry, and society.
- To provide media for the exchange of information and ideas among mathematicians, engineers, and scientists.
