What Will I Learn in the Artificial Intelligence Minor? 

Artificial Intelligence has swiftly become an integral part of modern life and technology. With a minor in artificial intelligence from University of Portland, you’ll gain modern, applied, and hands-on experience with creating and assessing AI systems. You’ll begin by learning basic programming skills and use them to design, analyze, and evaluate AI models. With courses that challenge you to apply your knowledge and models in a variety of contexts, you will be well-equipped to understand and operate AI in whatever venue you choose. 

Artificial Intelligence Minor Courses 

You’ll gain depth of programming experience in CS 203/273 (Introduction to CS) and CS 305 (Data Structures) using Java and C.  Furthermore, students get exposed to the Unix/Linux operating system and software development and operations in CS 376 (Unix/Linux Tools Lab). Students get breadth of experience in the choice of electives, with some more focused on data handling and data modeling and some more focused on societal impacts of AI systems. The elective courses use a variety of programming languages: python, R, SQL, C, and C++. Students who complete the minor will have gained marketable skills in designing and testing software, understanding the uses and limitations of AI models, and applying automation to different domains.
