What Will I Learn in the Latin American Studies Minor? 

University of Portland’s (UP) Latin American studies minor offers an interdisciplinary exploration of one of the world's most vibrant and complex regions. In this program, arts, humanities, and social sciences converge to foster a deep understanding of Latin America’s historical, linguistic, and socio-cultural contexts. By weaving together courses from multiple disciplines, you'll gain a multifaceted view of the region’s cultural, political, economic, environmental, and philosophical foundations. You will gain deep understanding of how diverse perspectives intersect on real-world issues. Adding this minor will richly enhance your major by equipping you with the critical-thinking and cross-cultural communication skills essential for engaging with diverse communities and succeeding in any career path you choose. 

Latin American Studies Courses 

The Latin American studies minor explores topics as diverse and vast as the region, which encompasses more than twenty-five nations and over six hundred and fifty million people. You will have the freedom to study its complex histories, multiple environments, and vibrant cultures through courses in philosophy, economics, environmental studies, history, Spanish, business, and communication, as well as immersive study abroad programs. This exploration of a transcultural, multilingual, and multiethnic region of undeniable global importance will give you the crucial insights and perspectives to become a better global citizen.
