What Will I Learn in the Neuroscience Studies Minor?

Have you always wondered how our brains work? As a neuroscience minor at University of Portland, you’ll seek to understand how the brain and nervous system acquire, process, and integrate information, how this leads to complex behaviors, and how it impacts our understanding of ourselves. You’ll learn the basic anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, and how neuroscience explains higher functions like learning, emotions, and memory. You’ll discover how external influences alter the functions of our nervous systems and evaluate the implications of neuroscience for the nature of the human person.  

Neuroscience Studies Minor Courses

This interdisciplinary minor offers courses that introduce students to the anatomy and physiology of the brain, including Behavioral Neuroscience, Sensation & Perception, and Neurobiology. Students also take Philosophy of Mind, a course that examines theories of the mind and consciousness. In addition, the minor provides options to explore topics such as evolution, genetics, philosophy of science, bioethics, behavior, and consciousness, enabling students to tailor the program to their specific interests in Neuroscience.
