What Will I Learn in the Theology Major?

The bachelor of arts (BA) in theology degree program at University of Portland (UP) helps you explore faith, meaning, and purpose while building moral reasoning and spiritual reflection skills. You’ll learn how to analyze complex ideas, engage in scholarly dialogue, and prepare for careers centered on serving others, like teaching or pastoral administration. You may also pair your theology degree with a double major in related subjects such as psychology, education, philosophy, or social work.

Theology has shaped liberal arts education for centuries, and by studying theology at UP, you’ll gain the knowledge to lead ethically, think deeply, and make a meaningful impact in your community and beyond.

Theology Courses

In the BA in theology program, the curriculum immerses you in the rich sub-disciplines of theology from a Catholic ecumenical perspective. There are two tracks available, so you can tailor your studies to your specific interests:

  • Biblical Studies Track: Explore topics across systematic theology, theological ethics, and spirituality. This track also includes a capstone and thesis component.
  • Historical-Theoretical Track: Discover the relationship between religion and science, personal values, and a wide array of other theological themes.

Both tracks culminate in a senior presentation where you showcase your theoretical knowledge. At the same time, elective courses and real-world internship opportunities with churches, hospitals, outreach programs, volunteer organizations, and more allow you to expand your learning further.
