About

Aziz S. Inan is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland's Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering, where he has also served as Chair of the Electrical Engineering department. He holds a B.S. from San Jose State University and both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Dr. Inan joined the faculty at UP in 1989, making him one of the longest-serving faculty members in the Shiley School. His teaching spans core electrical engineering courses including circuits, electromagnetics, and the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam Review in circuits and electromagnetics — a role he has held continuously since 1990.

He is the co-author of three widely used textbooks in electromagnetics, published in 1999, 2000, and 2015. His scholarly interests include the history and biography of foundational figures in electrical engineering, and he has published widely on topics ranging from Kirchhoff's circuit laws to the Smith Chart. He is a senior member of IEEE and a member of Tau Beta Pi. He has received the University of Portland's Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award and the ASUP Faculty of the Year Award.

Aziz has a strong record of departmental leadership and professional service at UP. He has served multiple terms as Chair of the Electrical Engineering department, most recently from 2022 through Fall 2025, and previously led the Electrical Engineering Faculty Search Committee. He has been a dedicated advisor to student professional organizations, serving as Faculty Advisor for the UP IEEE Student Club from 2016 to 2021 and for the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society since 2022. He has also contributed to university-wide governance through the Core Curriculum Committee and to accreditation efforts through the Shiley School's ABET Criterion 4 Committee.
