About

Bruce Weitzel is the Associate Dean of the School of Education (SOE) and an associate professor at the University of Portland. He has taught undergraduate, Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Initial Administrative License (IAL), Master of Education, and Master of Arts courses for the SOE over the past decade. Additionally, he serves as the SOE’s Director of Graduate Programs. Prior to that, he was a secondary language arts and social studies teacher and a middle and high school administrator in the Beaverton, Oregon School District. Dr. Weitzel received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Michigan State University, and he holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Additionally, he has served as a member of the Detroit Public Schools Decentralization Study, as a member of the Northwest Regional Desegregation and Sex Equity Centers, and as a Past-President of the Oregon Professors of Educational Administration. He currently holds Oregon teaching and administrative licenses and has served as an accreditation team member for both the Northwest Accreditation Commission (PK-12 Schools) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation/ National Council for the Accreditation of Colleges of Teacher Education (University Educator Preparation Programs). Dr. Weitzel’s academic areas of interest include: Organizational Change and School Improvement, Neuro-Based Instructional Practices, and Effective School Leadership.
