C.J. Hainley

About

C.J. Hainley is a Senior Instructor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Portland's Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering. A UP alumnus himself, he earned his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Portland before going on to complete his M.Sc. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  Before returning to join the faculty at UP, he spent several years in industry, first as a design engineer in the New Products Division at ESCO, and then as a senior design in engineer in the newly conceived Innovation Center at the same company.  He is a professional engineer, licensed in the State of Oregon.

His teaching spans the breadth of the undergraduate engineering experience — from introductory engineering and graphics through fabrication and assembly lab, materials laboratory, dynamic systems, and the full multi-disciplinary capstone sequence, including both standard and honors sections.  In these courses he strives to help students link what they are learning in class to their future professional lives.  From mock job interviews to professional certifications, he works with every student to feel empowered to embark on their future career.

CJ is also the faculty advisor for (and former alumnus of) the Pilot Aeronautics student club, which offers a unique opportunity for students to apply their in-class learning in real world design challenges.  Every year, this club competes in the SAE Aero Design competition, where teams from around the globe meet to head to head with their original designs and creations.  Attending club meetings, flight tests, and working with the team as they bring their ideas from paper to plane is one of the highlights of his year.

Outside of teaching, C.J. works as a professional musician.  He has functioned as the choir director at multiple churches, primarily specializing in Gregorian chant.  He currently directs the choir at St. Agatha Catholic Church.  He also plays jazz percussion, most recently having been the drummer in residences for the North Portland Big Band.
