Background Narrative
Dr. Julia Ruppell earned her Ph.D. in Biology with a specialization in Animal Ecology and Behavior from Portland State University (2013), her M.A. in Anthropology with a specialization in Primatology and Anatomy at Portland State University (2007), and her undergraduate degree from University of Rhode Island (2004). Her professional accomplishments range from research in forests of Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam to working as a senior research associate at the Oregon Zoo. She has been honored to be a Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellow and a Fulbright Scholar, and to serve as chair of the AAAS Pacific Division evolution, organismal, and biodiversity section. Her research interests range from bioacoustics (understanding the sounds animal make) to conservation, ecology, and behavior. Her largest contribution to the field has been her impact on understanding critically endangered white-cheeked crested gibbons (small apes), including their species distributions and adaptations to seasonal change and extreme environments. Originally from Rhode Island, Dr. Ruppell lives with her husband and children near Portland. At UP, she teaches Introduction to Evolution and Ecology, Animal Behavior, Primatology, Human Genetics, and Evolution senior capstone. The same love and respect for nature that propelled her research inspires her commitment to the classroom where she works to inspire students to continuously ask questions and work towards positive change.
