Martin Cenek is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Portland’s Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering. Before joining UP, he was a computer science faculty member at the University of Alaska, Anchorage AK and Portland State University, Portland OR. He also worked in industry as a Software Developer and IT Consultant.
Dr. Cenek joined the faculty at UP in 2018. His teaching spans core computer science fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and Unix tools as well as Introduction to Machine Learning, Database Management Systems and Research Courses in Computer Science.
His research interests include complexity theory, data science, machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, agent-based modeling, and coupled socio-ecological systems. His current and previous research projects include studying the adaptive capacity of Arctic communities impacted by climate change, a "Smart Trash" project using UAVs, computer visionand machine learning to analyze composition and contamination of recyclables at the curbside pickup and the landfill dynamics, , a Brain-Computer Interface projects, and smart microgrid systems using machine learning to forecast renewable power generation in Alaska. In summary, his work on intelligent cyber-physical systems includes designing data-driven machine learning tools to solve wide range of real-world problems.
Dr. Cenek serves on several editorial boards of peer-review academic journal, has served as a member on multiple councils and committees over the years and is currently a member of AI and Ethics Steering Council as well as Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO: Global Connections). He co-created and led the Engineering for Common Good program that aims to uplift the communities in need in Malawi, Africa.
