About

Matthew Barner is an Assistant Professor of Engineering at the University of Portland’s Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering. Prior to his role at UP, he served as a Research Assistant at Oregon State University and earlier worked as a tutor at Washington State University. He has also worked in industry as a Structural Engineer and an Independent Contractor.

Dr. Barner has been at the University of Portland since 2022. At UP, his teaching spans introductory civil engineering design, construction materials and methods, structural analysis and design (including reinforced concrete and structural steel), geotechnical lab work, and applied engineering computing. He also covers professional preparation through the FE Exam Review course, and cross-disciplinary fundamentals through Strength of Materials.

His research focuses on Engineering Education, with specific interests in situated cognition, curriculum development, faculty development, and structural and earthquake engineering education.

He serves as Faculty Advisor for the University of Portland's ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) student chapter. He has also participated as a guest instructor in UP's "Portland and the Public Imagination" interdisciplinary course, where he covered topics such as Portland's bridges and civil infrastructure.

He was awarded the 2022 William Elgin Wickenden Award by the Journal of Engineering Education Editorial Board — a prestigious honor in engineering education research.
