About

Natalie Nelson-Marsh (PhD University of Colorado, Boulder) teaches several courses in organizational communication including, identity and organizational culture, critical perspectives on organizing, collaboration, theory and philosophy of communication, communication and technology, and qualitative research methods.  Her research activities focus upon understanding and facilitating democratic and empowering modes of organizing. She typically studies nontraditional or postmodern organizing such as virtual organizations or interorganizational collaborations. As a qualitative researcher, she is curious about how these organizational forms hang together through communication in the absence of traditional organizational elements. When an organization lacks a physical location, she investigates how participants communicatively construct cultures and a collective identity as forms of organizational coherence. When there is a lack of consensus on how to move forward and participants are engaged in discussing multiple, competing perspectives, she explores how participants invite or silence different perspectives. In 2013, as part of an interdisciplinary research team, Nelson-Marsh was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. This project focused on four interorganizational collaborations working to develop policies to integrate renewable energy (wind and solar) into the current electricity system. Her published work appears in several top journals including Energy Research and Social Science, Management Communication QuarterlyNew Media and Society, and in several books. In 2007, her dissertation won the International Communication Association’s Dissertation of the Year Award. She has also won several teaching awards including Phi Kappa Phi’s Outstanding Teaching Award at Boise State University.
