About

Shaghayegh (Sherry) Abbasi is an Associate Professor of Engineering at the University of Portland’s Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering. Before joining the University of Portland, she worked in industry as a senior system design engineer at Lumedyne Technologies, where she developed a software model for a time-based MEMS accelerometer. She then built six years of teaching experience as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego.

Dr. Abbasi has been at the University of Portland since 2020. Her teaching spans introductory circuits, embedded systems, signal processing, and her specialty area of neuroimaging and brain stimulation.

Her current research interests center on repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), specifically investigating treatment outcomes through a combination of finite element method (FEM) simulation and clinical data analysis. She has also been collaborating on a bioengineering research project with the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego since 2016.

She has served as the faculty advisor for UP IEEE Student Club, a member of the UP Academic Senate, and a faculty mentor for the UP Honors Program. Outside of UP she has served as a reviewer for IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference (EMBC 2026), as well as a peer reviewer for multiple journals in her field.
