About

Timothy A. Doughty is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Portland’s Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering. Before UP, he taught at Purdue and Smith College. From 2009 to 2011, he served as a Faculty Scholar with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. He also has served as the Dundon-Berchtold Fellow of Ethics for the Shiley School of Engineering.

Dr. Doughty joined the faculty at UP in 2016. His teaching spans the full arc of mechanical and general engineering — from first-year fundamentals and computing through classical mechanics (statics, dynamics, strength of materials), into advanced mechanical systems, vibrations, and control. He teaches undergraduate Mechanical Vibrations, reflecting his core research specialty in nonlinear vibrations.

His research is in nonlinear vibrations as it applies to structural health monitoring and assistive technology. He has also worked on grants related to teaching in STEM fields and laboratory curricular development and is active in developing international research opportunities for undergraduates.

Tim has a strong record of institutional and professional service. He has served as UP's KEEN Lead since 2016 — an entrepreneurial mindset initiative — and recently joined the KEEN Rising Star Committee. On the faculty governance side, he currently sits on the Committee on Rank and Tenure, previously served on an Ad Hoc Title IX Policy review committee, and was a long-standing Advisory Board Member for the Dundon-Berchtold Institute for ethics. Within the Shiley School, he co-directed the Innovation Minor from 2017 to 2024 and represented the school on the university's Innovation Committee. Professionally, he has served on the editorial board of the ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Conference.
