I was an Innovations Intern at Hyster-Yale Materials Handling. I found the internship through UP’s career fair, and I am very grateful to my computer science professors, who gave me valuable feedback on my resume and helped me refine it into a final draft.
My job was to focus on research and development in AI, machine learning, robotics, and object detection. Over the summer, I had the amazing opportunity to present some of my findings with the rest of my fellow interns to the CEO. During the school year, I continued to work on creative and innovative projects while using new cutting-edge tools.
I was interested in the position because I love innovation. I am fascinated by technology and the infinite ways you can solve a singular problem. I also like learning, and this role let me continuously explore new ideas, tools, and approaches. One of my favorite moments was getting my forklift certification down at Hyster-Yale’s Clackamas Test Center. I got to drive so many different kinds of forklifts, touch the ceiling in the warehouse on an Order Picker, and lift up multiple tons in forklift loads.
My advice to UP students is to get as involved as you can. Go to the career fairs, study abroad, participate in clubs, volunteer, go to Pilots After Dark, and really take advantage of everything UP has to offer. Apply to as many jobs or internships as you can, go to as many networking events as you can, and always have a copy of your resume handy. You never know when you might meet someone and how important that connection could be in the future!
