As the social media intern for the Port of Portland, it's been really exciting to learn how to balance creativity with strategy—how to make content that's fun and engaging while still being intentional with messaging. PDX has a pretty iconic social media presence, and I've always admired how they're able to make an airport feel so playful and connected to the community. They're not afraid to experiment, take risks, or jump on trends (our team brainstorming sessions can get pretty wild!), and that’s broadened my creative toolbox and helped me become a more versatile, social-first storyteller.
My experience with UP Athletics played a huge role in preparing me for the position. I started as a social media assistant and now serve as a marketing graduate assistant, working on everything from content creation and video production to marketing campaigns and fan engagement. I've learned how to think creatively, work quickly, and adapt to different audiences.
Ironically, my journey with the Port actually started with a rejection for a different position, but I built some meaningful connections through that process. When the social media position opened up, one of those connections passed along my portfolio and put in a good word for me.
It's a reminder that sometimes the relationships you build can open doors you didn't even know existed. My advice is to find someone who works at the company or has held a similar position and ask about their experience. Learn what the team values, what challenges they're facing. At the end of the day, plenty of people can have the skills to do a job. What can really set you apart are the relationships you build, the perspective you bring, and how intentional you are about pursuing opportunities.
