What We Do
The First Generation Programs have a number of initiatives meant to support FGEN students and encourage participation in various on campus activities. From a mentorship program that pairs first-year FGEN students with peer mentors, various activities throughout the year, or educational events for FGEN students; the FGEN program is both a community and support for its students.
Mentorship Program
In the Mentorship Program, first-year FGEN students who sign up are matched with one of our FGEN student mentors. Mentors meet with their mentees and help provide advice, guidance, and support to their students.
Events & Activities
Throughout the year FGEN holds many events and activities designed to give FGEN students the opportunity to connect with each other and learn more about opportunities available to them. From fun activities like tailgating for a soccer game or celebrating graduates, to educational sessions and workshops, there's a little something for everyone!

Every year FGEN holds the following events to support and offer community to FGEN students at the university:
FirstUP Social
The FirstUP Social is a fun welcome event for first-year first-generation students, held during the first few weeks of the fall semester. Come meet fellow first-gen Pilots, make new friends, and kick off your first year by building connections and community through games, activities, and great conversation. It's the perfect opportunity to find your people and start your first-generation journey at the University of Portland!
FGEN Week
National First-Generation College Celebration Day is celebrated each year on November 8 to recognize and honor the achievements of those who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. At the UP, we celebrate all week long! FGEN Week features a variety of events and activities that bring together first-generation students, faculty, staff, alumni, and allies to celebrate, connect, and build community. From social events to educational programs, there's something for every first-gen Pilot and supporter to enjoy.
First-Generation Pinning Ceremony
The First-Generation Pinning Ceremony is a special celebration held during commencement weekend honoring graduating first-generation students as they prepare to cross the stage and begin their next chapter. Surrounded by family, friends, faculty, staff, and supporters, graduates are recognized for their perseverance, accomplishments, and the milestone of earning a college degree.
