Sociology Student Resources

Sociology majors have a wide range of interests and participate in diverse activities throughout the department and across campus. Students can become involved through internships and student organizations right here on The Bluff. The Sociology Student Handbook provides important information about program expectations, resources, opportunities, and ways to get involved. Students can also use the two-year course schedule to plan ahead and map out their coursework.

The Sociology program also recognizes student achievement and involvement through a variety of awards and honors. These opportunities celebrate academic achievement, leadership, service, and contributions to the department and broader community.

Awards for Excellence in Sociology & Criminology

The sociology and criminology programs celebrate the exceptional work of our students by conferring awards on graduating seniors who have demonstrated excellent work in the classroom, creative and innovative research, and meritorious public service. These awards are presented at a university-wide ceremony on Scholarship Day, when students and faculty come together to celebrate and honor our good work. Some of our awards include:

Robert W. Duff Award for Academic Excellence in Sociology

This honor is named for Professor Duff, sociology faculty emeritus, a highly respected and beloved member of the department and university.  It is conferred on a student of high academic achievement.

The Sociological Imagination Award

Named after the title of a very influential and important book by the eminent sociologist C. Wright Mills, this award acknowledges a student who has shown the ability to put sociological ideas into practice, through research or social action.

Psychology-Sociology Double-Major Award

In consultation with faculty in the department of psychological sciences, a student is selected to receive recognition for demonstrating high academic achievement in both disciplines. The award is meant to celebrate the interdisciplinary approach to scholarly inquiry.

Professional Organizations

Sociologists have a large number of organizations that promote research, practice, service, policy, education, and opportunities related to sociology. Many of these organizations such as the American Sociological Association and the Pacific Sociological Association offer student memberships, and are a great way to become familiar with the important issues in contemporary sociology.
