What Will I Learn in the Criminology Major?

Criminology is defined as the systematic study of crime as a social phenomenon, including the social processes of making laws, of breaking laws, and of reacting toward the breaking of laws. UP’s criminology major will challenge you to dive deep into a critical exploration of the law-breaking behavior and the criminal justice system, as well as strategize methods of social, economic, restorative, and retributive justice. Whether you’re interested in a career in law enforcement, criminal law, or pursuing a position in public policy or the nonprofit world, UP’s criminology major will shape your ability to analyze power structures, evaluate research, and tackle complex social and legal concerns through a humanistic lens.

Criminology Courses

The criminology degree coursework provides a variety of courses, analysis, and sociological studies through which students will develop a body of knowledge regarding the process of law, crime, corrections, and justice. With courses on topics like juvenile delinquency, technology & society, gender and violence, and the sociology of crime and justice, you’ll be well-equipped to analyze and challenge the constructs of the justice system and innovate for a fairer society.

The four-year curriculum culminates in a Senior project that emphasizes hands-on skills and analysis in examining some of the most pressing concerns in criminology and sociology today.
