What Is Management Information Systems?

Management information systems, MIS, is the study of how to use technology in an organization to improve business outcomes and achieve the most optimal benefit from personnel, technology, and business practices. It is a discipline used across industries at all levels of operation to collect, process, and analyze data in our digital world.

How Does MIS Differ from Computer Science?

Computer science focuses on writing computer code to create reliable programs, such as security software. MIS professionals focus on how to align technology effectively with a company’s people and business processes, like finding security vulnerabilities, creating a security plan, modifying software to align with organization goals, maximizing efficiencies, and training users.

Thus, management information systems analysts must determine an organization's overarching goals and draft a strategic plan for using technology to achieve those desired outcomes. They are not necessarily software programmers, though they do often have knowledge of one programming language to understand the role of programming in developing information systems.
