What Will I Learn in the Media Major?

Reimagining what’s possible for human connection—it’s what UP media majors are doing every day. With coursework in media theory, practice, and production via an interdisciplinary series of courses, the Bachelor of Science in Media will prepare you for the ever-changing landscape of human relations and give you the skills you need to meet what’s next.

Media majors will explore how communication is shaped by technology, from AI to social media to video games to advertising. You’ll explore topics like podcast creation, news-making, government decision-making, and public relations, honing your technical skills through media production in a variety of venues. And with access to UP’s award-winning student newspaper, the Beacon, as well as KDUP college radio, you’ll have countless opportunities for editing, writing, and developing your media-making skills in real time.

Media Courses

With required courses from the School of Business, department of Public Health and Wellness, department of Performing and Fine Arts, and Ethnic studies program, media majors will receive a rigorous and far-reaching interdisciplinary education on the way that communication shapes every industry. Courses include Public Speaking for Change, Media Criticism, Video Production, and Multimedia Storytelling.

Media majors will also have the option to pursue one of three Areas of Study that invite students to focus and apply their academic work even further: Media and Technology, Health Communication, or Journalism and Storytelling. No matter your interests, there are courses that will empower you to make connections across disciplines—from Technology in Health to Investigative Journalism and Democracy to Advertising for Creatives.

Media Internships

Media majors will receive hands-on experience with internship opportunities both on- and off-campus. Portland houses a diverse and thriving media landscape, and UP’s media program offers students unprecedented access to top connections in social media management, digital storytelling, and sound design and production.

Undergraduate Research

Deepen your engineering expertise and push the boundaries of the industry’s knowledge through undergraduate research opportunities at UP. By working one-on-one with faculty advisors, you can earn elective credit while exploring cutting-edge topics.
