Welcome to the Bluff!
UP hosts a Fall and Spring Orientation session for new students:
- Spring Orientation is for all students who are new to UP in the Spring semester: transfer students, newly admitted students, and students who deferred in the Fall.
- Fall Orientation is for all new students who are beginning their University of Portland journey in the fall.

- 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. - Orientation Headquarters open, Main Parking Lot.
- Your first stop when you arrive on campus as a commuter student! Residential students are welcome to drop by after they move into their residence hall. Orientation headquarters services to help all new students and family members build a sense of community on campus by providing information, resources, and free materials you will need for Orientation Weekend.
- 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. - Student ID card creation, Haggerty 100.
- If you have not submitted your photo online for your student ID card, please visit the Campus Security office to have your photo taken and your ID card created.
- 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. - Residence Hall Move-In Process begins, Residence Hall Quads.
- 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. - Pilot Family Hospitality Tent open, Pilot House Patio.
- Take a break from move-in and visit our tent by the Bookstore for snacks and cool UP swag. Ham it up at our photo wall, pick up helpful information, and take a moment to write a note of encouragement to your new student that we’ll deliver at a later date. Our Parent & Family Engagement team will be on hand to answer your questions about what to expect as our newest members of the Pilot family. We can’t wait to meet you!
- 12:05 p.m.-12:45 p.m. - Daily Catholic Mass (all faiths welcome), Chapel of Christ the Teacher.
- 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. - Commuter Student Lounge open, Dundon Berchtold Hall 101 (Franz Lounge).
- Commuter students are invited to gather here to relax and connect with their peers. Light refreshments will be provided.
- 3:00 p.m.-3:50 p.m. - New Student Athlete & Pilot Family Meeting, Bauccio Commons St. Andre Dining Room & Board Room.
- Parents of new student athletes will meet with coaches and staff, and hear brief presentations about the athletic program, including information on academic advising, NCAA compliance, athletic training, physical health, and other initiatives.
- 3:00 p.m.-3:50 p.m. - Encuentro en Español, Dundon Berchold 004 (Brian Doyle Auditorium).
- El Programa De Orientación en Español. A través de este programa se aprende más sobre la Universidad de Portland. La sesión se realiza en español. Se puede preguntar y hablar directamente con alumnos y profesionales de la Universidad. Está invitado a la conversa para aprender como acostumbrarse a la vida universitaria. Learn more about the University of Portland in your heritage language. Ask questions and speak with University faculty and students. Be included in the conversation about adjusting to college life
- 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. - Commuter Student Meeting & Social, Buckley Center Auditorium.
- Come meet and spend time with fellow commuter students. Learn about comfortable and convenient places on campus to gather with friends or study in between classes. Refreshments will be provided.
- 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. - Residence Hall Meetings, Kenna, Shipstad, Mehling, Villa Maria & Corrado Halls.
- This will be the first opportunity for parents, family members, and new residents to meet with hall staff and other new residents in the hall. Your hall staff will provide more details upon arrival.
- 5:15 p.m.-6:00 p.m. - President's Welcome, Chiles Center Arena.
- The President’s Welcome officially opens Orientation Weekend. This is a highlight of Orientation weekend that you and your parents won't want to miss. You'll be introduced to a host of university officials, meet university president Dr Robert Kelly, and learn more about the University's mission of Teaching and Learning, Faith and Formation, Service and Leadership.
- 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. - New Student Barbecue, Chiles Center Plaza.
- After a busy day students are invited to enjoy a barbecue dinner while learning more about campus and connecting with fellow Pilots!
- 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. - Pilot Parent and Family Social, Bauccio Commons St. Andre Dining Room & Bluff Lawn.
- After a busy day, parents, siblings, and other family members are invited to join University Relations for dinner, desserts, and adult beverages to celebrate a successful move-in day. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow Pilot parents, faculty, and staff.
- 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. - All Aboard! (New Student Mixer), Etzel Field.
- This first social event for new students at UP is designed to help you meet and interact with the class of 2030. Dress in something comfortable as you will be moving around! When you look back on your first four days at UP, you will definitely think of this as one of the highlights! You will also learn from student leaders about the variety of extracurricular activities and opportunities for student involvement beyond the classroom.
- 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. - Flex the Rec!, Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center.
- 7:30 a.m. - Breakfast available, Bauccio Commons.
- 8:00 a.m. - Orientation Headquarters Open, Main Parking Lot.
- If you haven’t already, check in at Orientation Headquarters to receive your Orientation materials. Orientation Assistants will be available to answer questions and guide you in the right direction.
- 9:00 a.m. - First Year Experience at UP, Chiles Center Arena.
- This session is designed to provide a framework for how to get the most out of your college experience, specifically your first semester. Knowing there is a lot to explore, it is equally important to say yes and try new things, and take care of yourself in the process.
- 9:00 a.m.-Noon - Transfer Orientation Session #1, Dundon Berchtold 004 (Brian Doyle Auditorium).
- Transfer students will meet together independently from first-year students to learn about the University and resources available. This introductory session will provide important information about your UP academic exeperince.
- 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. - First-Year Anchor Workshop #1, Assigned Classrooms.
- Anchor Workshops have approximately 20-25 first-year students and will meet throughout the weekend. The first meeting will be an opportunity to get acquainted with peers, discuss the purpose of orientation and what to expect, and answer questions. Attendance at orientation Anchor sessions will be part of the attendance grade for the seminar class during the semester.
- 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. - Lunch, Bauccio Commons St. Andre Dining Room & Bluff Lawn.
- 12:05 p.m.-12:45 p.m. - Catholic Mass (all faiths welcome), Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

- 2:15 p.m.-3:15 p.m. - Healthy Minds and Informed Choices (M, T, W, R, 7:00 p.m. classes), Buckley Center Auditorium.
- Join the Wellness Center and Campus Safety to learn more about making informed decisions around substance use, ways to stay safe, UP policy, and resources available for support. Based upon past student experiences, they will be bringing you trivia questions to test your knowledge on common questions students have about substances and UP resources. Bring questions of your own to get honest, non-judgmental answers.
- 2:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. - Transfer Orientation Session (Part 2), Dundon Berchtold 004 (Brian Doyle Auditorium).
- 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. - Anchor Dialogue (M, T, W, R 7:05 p.m. classes), Assigned Classrooms.
- 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. - Healthy Minds and Informed Choices (M, T, W, R 6:00 p.m. classes, Transfer Students), Buckley Center Auditorium.
- Join the Wellness Center and Campus Safety to learn more about making informed decisions around substance use, ways to stay safe, UP policy, and resources available for support. - 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. - Bite on the Bluff, Chiles Center Plaza.
- The annual Bite on The Bluff is coming back to UP! This year’s event is our 18th anniversary! The event is a food festival featuring some of Portland’s best food trucks. All hosted in our Chiles Center Plaza before the men's soccer match. Vendors will accept debit/credit cards or cash. During Bite on the Bluff, the UP Bookstore will provide a special VIP event with discounted pricing on popular UP logo merchandise and more. Stop by to pick up your game day gear!
- 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. - Men's Soccer Game vs. University of California Bears, Merlo Field.
- 9:00 р.m.-11:00 p.m. - Pilots After Dark (Karaoke Night!), Pilot House.
- 9:00 a.m. - Breakfast available, Bauccio Commons.
- 9:30 a.m. - Orientation Headquarters Open, Main Parking Lot.

- 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. - Healthy Relationships, Chiles Center Arena.
- Since you come to the Bluff from different experiences and backgrounds, UP wants to be sure all students understand consent. Consent is fundamental to relationships not only while you are a Pilot, but as you move into the world after UP. This program provides an interactive approach to discussing the importance of consent, its definition, and how to obtain consent from another person.
- 4:00 p.m.-4:45 p.m. - Anchor Workshop #3, Assigned Classrooms.
- 5:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. - Dinner (on your own)
- 5:00 p.m. - Traveler's Mass, Chapel of Christ the Teacher.
- 7:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. - Performance by Mentalist Mat O'Neill, Chiles Center Arena.
- 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. - Wind Symphony (MUS 443), Pep Band (non-credited), and Orchestra Winds and Percussion (MUS 445) Auditions (please contact Dr. Patrick Murphy for information), Buckley Center Auditorium.
- 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. - University Orchestra (MUS 445): Strings Audtions: violin, viola, cello, double bass (please contact Dr. Rebekah Hanson for more information), Buckley Center 019.
- 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. - Jazz Ensemble (MUS 453) Auditions (please contact Dr. Don Norton for more information), Mago Hunt Theater.
- 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. - University Choir Auditions: University Singers (MUS 444), Chamber Choir (MUS 447G), and Bel Canto (MUS 452) (please contact Dr. David De Lyser for more information), Mago Hunt Recital Hall.
- 9:00 a.m. - Brunch available (on your own)
- 10:30 a.m. - Opening Weekend Mass, Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

- 8:30 p.m. - Bell Tower Ceremony, Bell Tower Plaza.
