As an AI Robotics Intern at Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, my key responsibilities included implementing the software stack to the company's robots and putting them through simulations. Everything I did during the internship was pretty new to me. However, being able to talk about my computer science experiences at UP, like courses, hackathons, and projects, helped me answer questions during the interview and set me apart.
I found out about the position at the UP Career Fair. I walked up to the Hyster-Yale booth not knowing if they had a computer science-related position. Once I learned about it, I got interested in robotics and programming as a potential career path, and that made me excited to apply.
Some of my favorite moments were presenting our work in front of the VP, COO, and CEO of Hyster-Yale. I also had the opportunity to get a forklift certification, and learning to drive one was a highlight.
My advice for getting an internship you want is to try to get tips from someone who has interviewed for a similar position. I was lucky to get interview advice from a classmate, which helped ease my nerves and prepare me for possible questions. Using the Career Education Center to review my resume and practice interview questions was also extremely helpful. Also, try practicing being interviewed by several people at once. My interview was with four people. If I had practiced with 2 or more people, I would have felt a lot more comfortable.
