Student FAQs
Please email CSWS@up.edu if you have any other questions. We are more than happy to meet with you to discuss your interests and explore CSWS as an option for you.
All available CSWS positions are posted on the University of Portland Student Job Board. When you find a job that you'd like to apply to, you should follow all instructions for how to apply like any other Student Employment position.
In order to work in a Community Service Work Study position, you must be eligible for Federal Work Study. Students apply to receive work study funds by filling out a FAFSA form.
Contact the Financial Aid Office if you have questions about your eligibility by phone (503-943-7311) or by email.
The University will pay 100% of the student’s wages on a bi‐monthly basis. Click here for the Student Pay Schedule. The CSWS student worker's supervisor is responsible for monitoring the student’s hours worked and verifying a bi‐monthly timesheet.
Students may only work during the academic year and not during the summer months. Contact CSWS@up.edu for exact dates for the upcoming year.
Students work schedules will be governed by the policies of both the University of Portland and the host site where their work will take place. For information about University of Portland Student Employment policies, please click here to access the Student Employment Student Handbook. CSWS students may not work more than 20 hours per week when classes are in session, 29 hours per week when classes are not in session (such as over winter break), or more than 8 hours per day.
Additionally, because the student is paid through their Federal Work Study allotment, the total number of hours worked is governed by the allotment of the specific student. Once a student earns all of their allotment for the year, they are no longer eligible to be employed by the CSWS program but can continue as a volunteer with the organization if they and the organization desire.
There are multiple options for getting to your service site. You may drive, walk, bike, or use public transportation to access your work site.
Moreau Center vehicles are not available for CSWS use.
Organizations willing and able to assist in offering students TriMet tickets or other transportation assistance are welcome to do so.
Riding Your Bike
Riding your bike is a great way to get to your service site. If you don't have a bike on campus, Recreational Services has bikes available for checkout through Beauchamp Recreational and Wellness Center.
Using Public Transportation
Portland has a very effective public transportation system by way of TriMet buses and light rail (MAX). Buses #35 and #44 come right next to campus.
For help planning your route, visit the TriMet Trip Planner or Maps & Schedules. Transit tickets and passes can be purchased through Campus Safety.
Zipcar
The University of Portland has car sharing options available. Cars can be picked up on campus or at various locations around the city.
Learn more about the UP Zipcar program and register for an account. If you have any questions regarding the program, contact Campus Safety at 503.943.7161 (x7161).
Moreau Center Vehicles
The Moreau Center has five vehicles available to check out. They are generally available only for volunteering. Approval for other use is on a case-by-case basis.
To reserve a vehicle or for questions, contact the Moreau Center at 503-943-7132 or moreaucenter@up.edu.
Be sure to have your driver form on file at Campus Safety before your trip.

Every pay period (every two weeks), CSWS students must submit two timesheets. One of the timesheets is a digital timesheet that they must submit on SelfServe, and the other is a physical/PDF timesheet signed by their on-site supervisor that they must email to CSWS@up.edu. The CSWS team will cross reference these hours and approve them to make sure each student is paid the correct amount.
CSWS students are paid the current minimum wage in the Portland Metro area plus 75 cents. For the 2024-25 school year, CSWS students will be paid $16.70/hour.
