Application Tips

Please note that there is a separate application for general admission to the University of Portland that must be completed prior to applying to the Honors Program.

  • When constructing your essay or video, try to avoid simply recounting your resumé. Instead, respond to the given prompt and tell a story about yourself to give us the best sense of who you are as a student/academic/learner/change maker.
  • Consider writing your essay using word processing software with which you can do character counts, save drafts of your essay, and copy your essay text from. Once you begin your online application, you will then be able to copy and paste your essay into the online application form.
  • One letter of recommendation is required. Letter writers may submit the same letter they wrote for your general application. To register your referee, enter their contact information in the online application and press the “Request Recommendation” button. The system will generate an email to your referee and provide direction on how to submit the letter of recommendation.
  • For an application to be considered complete, the student application form, a letter of recommendation, and an informational meeting must be completed. It is advisable to talk with your preferred referee prior to completing your online application to ensure that they will be able to complete a letter of recommendation for you.
  • Informational meetings can be completed on campus or via Zoom. If you choose to visit campus for your informational meeting, you will meet with the Honors Program director and a current student. Zoom meetings will be with a current student only.
