Psychology is the scientific study of both human and nonhuman behavior, thought, and emotion. At the University of Portland, students develop a broad understanding of psychological principles, theories, research methods, and applications through a traditional liberal arts education.

The curriculum explores diverse areas of psychology, including cognition, neuroscience, lifespan development, perception, personality, learning, social psychology, and psychological disorders. Students also develop an understanding of human diversity and difference and learn to use scientific methods—including observation, experimentation, and data analysis—to explore questions about behavior and emotion.

Through research opportunities, close collaboration with faculty, and internships, students gain practical experience while developing skills in critical thinking, research, writing, data analysis, and communication. These skills are valuable across a wide range of careers and graduate programs.

Psychological Sciences provides a strong foundation for graduate study in psychology as well as fields such as education, counseling, law, and medicine. Graduates may also pursue careers in business, advertising, social services, nonprofit organizations, community development, and other settings where understanding people and behavior is essential.
