Shipstad Hall was built in 1967 on the site of what was once a five-hole golf course. The hall is named for the Eddie Shipstad family, one-time owners of the Ice Follies, who were the building's primary benefactors. Shipstad housed men for its first 20 years and then in the fall of 1987, it became the University's first coed hall. Today, it houses men and women in 137 rooms on four floors. Shaped somewhat like a "Z," the hall has two large lounges with televisions, a pool table, and a piano; four study rooms; bike storage; a chapel; a kitchen; and laundry facilities. The hall is also home to the University Archives and the University's Heritage Museum, both located in the building's basement.
What is the average size of a Shipstad Hall room?
Shipstad Hall is an older building and does not have uniform room sizes throughout the building. The majority of the double rooms (which are extendable, meaning they can hold two or three students) are approximately 184 square feet, but a few are slightly larger. Triple rooms with bathrooms are approximately 220 square feet, while standard triple rooms are approximately 309 square feet. Single rooms are approximately 140 square feet.
How is a double room in Shipstad Hall laid out?
Beds can be bunked or lofted. For each student in the room, there is a wardrobe, a dresser, and a desk. Dressers, wardrobes, and desks are moveable. Rooms have laminate flooring.
