Apply as an International Graduate Student
Apply as an International Graduate Student
The University of Portland community is enriched by the hundreds of students who join us each year from over 40 different countries on six continents. For admission purposes, applicants are considered an international student if they are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and they plan to attend the University in a valid non-immigrant visa status (F-1, J-1, E-2, H-4 visas as well as others). The following information will provide details that will assist you throughout the admissions process.
International Graduate Student Checklist
- Graduate School Program Applications
- English proficiency exam: Non-native English speakers must submit an English proficiency exam score, or be able to waive the requirement through previous study. Minimum score requirements and further waiver information is available on our English Proficiency Requirements page.
Additional Items (post-acceptance)
These two items are needed if you are accepted to the University in order to complete immigration form processing. The earlier these items are received the better we can assist you.
- Immigration Information and International Student Declaration of Finances Worksheet
- Copy of Passport Biographical Page
All documents submitted to UP become the property of the University and cannot be returned to applicants.
Timeline
Applications deadlines for Graduate School programs vary by program. However, international students should begin the application process as soon as possible to allow at least two months for student visa processing. Admission decisions will be made after the University has received all application checklist items. I-20 forms will be issued to students after they are fully accepted to the University.
As questions arise throughout the application process, please contact the Graduate School.
Scholarships and Financial Resources
UP offers merit-based scholarships to eligible international applicants. Learn more about the award ranges and eligibility criteria. Additional financial resources and information pertaining to international students are provided here.
English Proficiency Requirements

Students who will complete at least 1 year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of university-level coursework in the United States that includes writing and composition may waive the requirement. Check our English Proficiency Requirement page for more information.
