Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English language competency. University of Portland accepts a number of language proficiency exams and benchmarks to satisfy this requirement.

Undergraduate English Language Proficiency

English Exams and Minimum Score Requirements:

  • GTEC (Global Test of English Communication) for university students - score of 1181 or above   
  • Duolingo - score of 105 or higher 
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic exam - score of 58 or above
  • GCE or IGCSE (English- 2nd Language) – grade of A-C
  • IB (English –A & B) – grade of 7-4
  • IELTS – 6.5 overall and minimum 6.0 in reading and writing sections. IELTS at home test option available.
  • TOEFL (iBT) –71 overall and minimum 16 in reading and writing sections (the University of Portland TOEFL code is 4847) TOEFL will temporarily be offering an at home test option
  • SAT (Evidenced-based Reading & Writing) – 550
  • ACT (English section) - 21
  • Manchester Exam - 400 

Coursework that will satisfy the English proficiency requirement:

  • 3 years (6 semesters) of high school completed in the United States. These first-year student applicants are waived from the English proficiency requirement, but will be asked to submit SAT or ACT scores to be considered for admission.
  • 1 year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of university-level coursework completed in the United States that includes 1 semester (or 2 quarters) of writing and composition with a final grade of C or better.

Graduate English Language Proficiency

Score requirements vary by program, check the list below to find the minimum score required for admission.

Business Administration: 88 TOEFL (iBT); 570 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS; 110 Duolingo
Communication Studies: 100 TOEFL (iBT); 600 TOEFL (PBT); 7.5 IELTS; 120 Duolingo
Education: 88 TOEFL (iBT); 570 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS; 110 Duolingo
Engineering: 79 TOEFL (iBT); 550 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS; 110 Duolingo
Nursing: 100 TOEFL (iBT); 600 TOEFL (PBT); 7.5 IELTS; 120 Duolingo
Theology: 79 TOEFL (iBT); 550 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS; 110 Duolingo
