Apply as a First-Year Student
The University of Portland community is enriched by the hundreds of students who join us each year from over 40 different countries on six continents.
For admission purposes, applicants are considered an international student if they are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and they plan to attend the University in a valid non-immigrant visa status (F-1, J-1, E-2, H-4 visas as well as others). The following information will provide details that will assist you throughout the admissions process.
International First-Year Student Checklist

- Secondary School Report / Recommendation Form
- Essay (follow application prompts)
- SAT or ACT Exam:
- Optional for applicants through Fall 2024. You can indicate if you would like test scores used on your application.
- If you will complete secondary school outside the US, or will complete less than 3 years of high school in the US at the time of graduation is not required to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT 1) or the American College Test (ACT).
- If you will complete 3 or more years of high school in the United States by the time of high school graduation you will be required to submit scores from the SAT or ACT. However, you will not need to submit an English language proficiency exam.
- English proficiency exam: Non-native English speakers who will complete less than 3 years of high school in the US by the time of graduation must submit an English proficiency exam score. Minimum score requirements and further information is available at our English Proficiency Requirements page.
These two items are needed if you are accepted to the University in order to complete immigration form processing. The earlier these items are received the better we can assist you.

All documents submitted to UP become the property of the University and cannot be returned to applicants.
Timeline

| January 15 | Recommended deadline to guarantee space available in fall class. |

English Proficiency Requirements
Non-native English speakers must submit an English proficiency exam to complete their application. Students who will complete 3 years or more of high school in the US are waived from the English proficiency exam requirement, but will be asked to submit SAT or ACT scores when applying. Required International Academic Records
UP must receive your official or attested academic documents directly from the original issuing source (i.e., college, university, examining board or secondary school). Learn more about what documents are required from your education system.
