English Proficiency Requirements

Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English language competency. University of Portland accepts a number of language proficiency exams and benchmarks to satisfy this requirement.

Undergraduate English Language Proficiency

English Exams and Minimum Score Requirements:
GCE or IGCSE (English- 2nd Language) – grade of A-C
IB (English –A & B) – grade of 7-4
IELTS – 6.5 overall and minimum 6.0 in reading and writing sections
TOEFL (iBT) –71 overall and minimum 16 in reading and writing sections (the University of Portland TOEFL code is 4847)
SAT (Evidenced-based Reading & Writing) – 550 (or equivalent score on ACT)

Coursework that will satisfy the English proficiency requirement:

  • 3 years (6 semesters) of high school completed in the United States. These freshmen applicants are waived from the English proficiency requirement, but will be asked to submit SAT or ACT scores to be considered for admission.
  • 1 year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of university-level coursework that includes 1 semester (or 2 quarters) of writing and composition with a final grade of C or better.

Graduate English Language Proficiency

Score requirements vary by program, check the list below to find the minimum score required for admission.

Business Administration: 88 TOEFL (iBT); 570 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS
Communication Studies: 100 TOEFL (iBT); 600 TOEFL (PBT); 7.5 IELTS
Drama: 79 TOEFL (iBT); 550 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS
Education: 88 TOEFL (iBT); 570 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS
Engineering: 79 TOEFL (iBT); 550 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS
Nursing: 100 TOEFL (iBT); 600 TOEFL (PBT); 7.5 IELTS
Theology: 79 TOEFL (iBT); 550 TOEFL (PBT); 7.0 IELTS
