Studies Abroad: Salzburg, Austria Full Year Program
The Salzburg program is the oldest and most popular study abroad program at the University of Portland. Academically, it is centered on year long courses in art history, German, and music that are supplemented by tours to France, Greece, and Italy. Salzburg itself is the birthplace of Mozart and home to the world-famous Salzburg Music Festival. The tours in the fall semester include visits to art museums and historical sites in Vienna, Reims, Paris, Versailles, and Strasbourg. The three-week spring tour includes visits to Delphi, Athens, Corinth, Olympia, Pompeii, Rome, Florence, Ravenna, and Padua.
Administrated exclusively by the University of Portland, the Salzburg program has been running since 1964. Program dates extend between Wednesday, September 4, 2013 to Thursday, May 1, 2014, with a winter break during late December and early January. The total program cost is $49,590, which includes tuition, housing, insurance, and the fall and spring tours. It does not include airfare to Salzburg. Students are eligible for institutional financial aid, including work study.
Located in the northwestern corner of Austria, a short distance from Germany, Salzburg retains a fairytale-like atmosphere with its beautiful baroque buildings and stunning white castle, the Festung Hohensalzburg (Fortress). Culturally significant as the birthplace of Mozart, the setting for the Sound of Music, and its charming Altstadt (Old Town), which has been declared a UNESCO World heritage area, Salzburg offers a variety of entertainment for all inclinations. Sites include palaces such as Schloss Mirabell (Mirabell Palace) or the nearby Hellbrunn palace, museums such as Haus der Natur (Natural History Museum), Museum Carolino Augusteum (History Museum) and the Residenz Gallery (Residence Gallery), churches such as St. Peter’s Cathedral, the cemetery, various convents and monasteries, Mozart’s residence, as well as various markets, theaters, shops, and cafes.
