Celebrating the Creativity and Energy of American Catholic Life

Dorothy Day: Writings from Commonweal
Patrick Jordan
7:30pm in Buckley Center Auditorium
Patrick Jordan, managing editor at Commonweal Magazine, worked closely with Dorothy Day at St. Joseph House, a Catholic Worker community in New York, as well as at the Catholic Worker newspaper. He is editor of the book Dorothy Day: Writings from Commonweal (2002, Liturgical Press). Jordan joined Commonweal in 1984.
Dorothy Day (1897-1980), a social activist and Catholic convert, is described as one of the most significant and influential people in American Catholicism’s history. She was a frequent contributor to Commonweal Magazine from 1929-1973 and it was in December 1932 that a past editor at the magazine introduced Peter Maurin to Dorothy Day. Together they founded the Catholic Worker movement, a pacifist movement that promotes Catholic social teaching and provides direct aid for the poor and homeless. The Blanchet House, founded by UP alumni and located in Portland's Old Town neighborhood, was modeled on Dorothy Day's example.
The Commonweal Speakers Program is made possible thanks to a generous gift from James H. Duffy and the support of University Regent, Ralph Bliquez and his wife, Karen.

Delving into the fundamental and enduring questions that add meaning and value to our lives, The Calling provides a candid glimpse into the nature of belief, the bonds of family and being brave enough to ask: Who am I?

Corita Kent art exhibit
Buckley Center Gallery
Reception held on Friday, February 18. Open to the public.
Corita Kent viewed the culture of a tumultuous era through the lens of Catholic spirituality and the holiness of everyday life. She used silkscreen prints as a catalyst to elicit an emotional response toward social action. Her work from the 1950’s to 1980’s used bright, dramatic images often based on commercial symbols, references to mass media, popular culture and current political events to deepen the viewer’s understanding of these issues and to propel them into action.
A Catholic nun for over 30 years with the Sisters of the Imaculate Heart of Mary in Los Angeles, Kent was an art teacher at Immaculate Heart College until she left the convent in 1968 and moved to Boston. She continued to work on her art until her death in 1986. Kent’s work includes the well-known “Love” U.S. postage stamp in 1985.
