Diversity & Inclusion Programs
Diversity & Inclusion Programs (DIP) engage and educate students and the University of Portland community on issues, topics, and events related to diversity and inclusion. DIP's programs, events, and speakers celebrate and enrich the educational experience for all students and help to create a welcoming campus for all.
MLK Day ON
The University of Portland community considers Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a day ON (not a day off), in the spirit of King's wise assessment of what gives meaning to life. Our series of MLK Day ON events reflect-in-action our missional commitment to teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership.

Diversity Center
The Diversity Center (DC) offers a nurturing, inclusive, and brave space for UP community members of all-backgrounds (race/ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, national/geographic origin, language use, SES, FGEN, Veteran/Military status, intersectional identities, etc.). This is a space for people to study, relax, meet, interact, and engage with each other in a supportive learning environment.
Speak UP
Grounded in our mission of Teaching & Learning, Faith & Formation, and Service & Leadership, we strive to promote a safe environment where all people can live, work, and learn. We ask members of our community to SPEAK UP and report alleged incidents of observed or experienced interactions of discrimination or harassment.

Affinity groups are an opportunity for people to connect with others who share salient aspects of their identity. These groups are particularly helpful for historically minoritized and underrepresented individuals to gather in community. Affinity groups, however, are not employee resource groups.
We are so grateful to the staff and faculty who have dedicated their time and energy to establishing and maintaining affinity groups at the University of Portland. The current active groups are listed below.
- Latinx Employees Group—contact Marija Hobbs and José Velazco
- Black Employees Group—contact Erica Bailey and Anita Gooding
- LGBTQIA+ Employees Group—contact the AJ Van Valkenburg and Trini Sepulveda.
- AAPI Employees Group –– contact Aimee Davidse and Elisa Majors
- Disability Affinity Group –– contact dag@up.edu.
At the University of Portland, affinity groups are led by faculty and staff on campus so that the programming and engagement remain true to the groups themselves.
Here is information on how to start an affinity group. For further questions, please contact oiedi@up.edu
