About

Lara-Zuzan Golesorkhi is a scholar-practitioner who established a non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO) that was selected as one of the ten winners of the United Nations 2015 Global Diversity Contest while completing her Ph.D. at The New School for Social Research. Lara-Zuzan is deeply committed to connecting theory and practice inside and outside the classroom. Her research interests lie in the historical–institutional relationship between migration, religion, and gender. Lara-Zuzan’s dissertation, State-Islam Relations in Germany and the US, examines the extent to which the place of Muslims and Islam has been contested in both countries. Informed by her dissertation research, Lara-Zuzan developed a policy project and founded WoW e.V., a human rights NGO, to address employment rights of Muslim immigrants and refugees in Germany. Through her human rights practice, she has been able to push for more inclusivity in the German labor market at the European Commission and the United Nations, as well as on the federal and state level in Germany. Lara-Zuzan’s recent work focuses on refugees and sustainable livelihoods. For her current project, The Refugee Gender Gap, she conducted ethnographic research in Turkey, Jordan, and Germany. In the classroom, Lara-Zuzan’s emphasis lies in American Politics and Comparative Politics. She also teaches specialized courses on migration, gender, Muslims, and Islam. Lara-Zuzan is a big sports fan, and enjoys hip-hop and reggae.
