Background Narrative
Martin Monto, Ph.D. is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Portland. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from UCLA and holds bachelor's degrees in Life Sciences and Sociology from Kansas State University. His research examines gender, sexuality, public health, generational trends, and environmental sociology, with a particular interest in how social and cultural beliefs shape human behavior and influence the natural environment. A passionate supporter of undergraduate research, Dr. Monto has supervised dozens of senior theses and received the University of Portland's Undergraduate Research Mentor Award (2024). A productive scholar, Monto is a two-time recipient of the Hugo Beigel Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (2015 and 2025), recognizing the best article published in The Journal of Sex Research during a calendar year. In his classes, Dr. Monto encourages students to think critically about evidence, question assumptions, and develop the research skills needed to better understand the social world. Outside the classroom, he enjoys travel, singing, hiking, beer tasting, and home improvement projects.
