Nancy Copic is the Assistant Director for Student Media and advisor to The Beacon, UP’s student-run all-digital news publication. Prior to joining the staff at UP in 2009, Nancy had a journalism career spanning almost three decades. Most recently she was a news reporter and anchor at Portland’s NBC affiliate KGW-TV, where she worked for 22 years  (as Nancy Francis) covering politics and government, courts and crime, the environment, social issues and features. Earlier in her career, she worked as an anchor and reporter at KSHB-TV in Kansas City, Mo. and KOIN-TV in Portland.

Nancy’s work has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, United Press International and the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Nancy attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a concentration in political science. She holds a Masters of Arts in Teaching at the secondary level from Lewis & Clark College.

During Nancy’s tenure at The Beacon, its staff has won dozens of awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Collegiate Press, the College Media Association, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. Nancy is a member of the Online News Association, Investigative Reporters and Editors, the College Media Association, and Journalism and Women Symposium.
