Army ROTC: Program Options
When entering the ROTC program, you have a wide variety of options, depending on your academic standing, previous experience, and depth of commitment. The following are the options available to students interested in participating in Army ROTC:
Four Year Option
The traditional four-year program is divided into two parts.
In the first two years, you will take the Basic Course covering subjects such as military history, traditions and organizations, and national defense. There will be a heavy emphasis on leadership, decision-making, and communication development.
There is no commitment for the first two years, if you do not have a ROTC scholarship. Upon successful completion of the Basic Course, you will be eligible to compete for entrance into the Advanced Course.
During the Advanced Course, the curriculum will consist of instruction and practice in management, tactics, ethics, training development, and continued leadership development.
During your four years, all ROTC textbooks, uniforms, and essential materials will be furnished at no cost. Also, if selected for the Advanced Course, you will receive an allowance of up to $5,000 each year.
During the summer between your junior and senior years, you will attend the Leadership Development and Assessment Course, a training session that will give you a hands-on feeling for the Army, and let you practice everything you have learned - including how to lead. Leadership Development and Assessment Course lasts 32 days, and you will get paid to learn while you are there.
Two & Three Year Option
If you miss the first one or two years of ROTC, are a graduate of a junior or community college, or are entering a two-year post-graduate course of study, you may still qualify for a commission through the two- or three-year program.
In this program, you first attend the Leaders Training Camp for four weeks during the summer prior to your junior year. This paid course takes place at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
