Army ROTC: ROTC for Veterans
If you are a veteran, Army ROTC can help you make the most of the time you have invested and the experience you have gained in the military.
Your military experience could fulfill the necessary requirements for the ROTC Basic Course. This means you could enroll directly in the Advanced Course (a three-year ROTC scholarship winner must begin as an MS II cadet). In addition to any financial assistance received from ROTC, you are still qualified to receive any and all VEAP/GI Bill/Army College Fund benefits to which you are entitled.
Post 9/11 GI Bill
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition and fees. You may have tuition and fees that exceed that amount if you are attending a private institution, graduate school or attending in an out-of-state status. If you are enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition or fees, additional funds may be available for your education program without an additional charge to your entitlement.
Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
REAP (Chapter 1607 of title 10, U.S. Code) is a new benefit providing educational assistance to members of the reserve components - Selected Reserve (Sel Res) and Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) - who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress. Generally, a member of a reserve component who serves on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 under title 10, U.S.C., for at least 90 consecutive days under a contingency operation is eligible for REAP. Currently (as of Oct. 2009) the maximum monthly payout is
$1,094.40 (2+ years of service and full time enrollment).
Yellow Ribbon Program
Institutions that voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with VA choose the amount of tuition and fees that will be contributed. VA will match that amount and issue payment directly to the institution.
Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Therefore, you may be eligible if:
- You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
- You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
- You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
