Fr. Gary Chamberland is a native of Great Barrington, Massachusetts and is the youngest of seven children. He returns to The Bluff after spending several years teaching Canon Law in the Theology Department at the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Gary was ordained as a priest in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1998 and has served as an associate pastor at Christ the King Parish in South Bend, Indiana and as rector of a Keenan Hall, a men’s residence hall at the University of Notre Dame. Prior to his ordination, Fr. Gary taught Junior High at St. Philip Neri School in Alameda, California and served here at the University of Portland as hall director of Shipstad Hall from 1992-1995.
Fr. Gary earned his Licentiate in Canon Law from The Catholic University of America, a Master of Divinity degree at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame. Following his graduation from Notre Dame, Fr. Gary first came to Portland an a Holy Cross Associate, a lay volunteer program sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross, and taught at Immaculate Heart Community School in North East Portland.
