Diarrhea can also lead to dehydration.
If you are having both vomiting and diarrhea, you should
follow the vomiting instructions.
Drink lots of hydrating fluids such as those listed above.
If there is no vomiting, the BRAT following the BRAT diet
for 24 hours can help decrease diarrhea.
The BRAT diet is Bananas, Rice (white), Apples, and Toast (whiten and
without butter).
You should call the UniversityHealthCenter if you have blood
in your diarrhea, if you have significant abdominal pain (more than just
cramping), or if you have a fever greater than 101.
You should seek immediate evaluation if you have significant
symptoms of dehydration or very significant abdominal pain.
Diarrhea can be controlled with the medication Imodium
A.K.A. Loperamide. This is available
over the counter at pharmacies. It comes
as 2 mg tablets. You can take 2 tablets
initially, then 1 after each loose stool, not more than a total of 8/day. Do not use for more than two days.
