International Student Services: Programs
Programming is an integral part of the international student experience at the University. In the list below you will find programming for social activities, cross-cultural teaching, health and wellness support, and career guidance.
| International Club |
|
The International Club promotes friendship and cooperation among all students in the University to welcome new international and American students to the University community. The International Club also encourages understanding, justice, unity, and peace through the promotion of cultural, social, and educational activities. These activities include monthly culture education socials, Oktoberfest, an art festival, a weekend beach trip, holiday celebrations, volunteer activities, and more. All UP students, graduate and undergraduate, are encouraged to join the International Club. For more information about club events please visit the International Club website. |
| International Week & Night |
|
International Week and Night is the largest international event of the year planned by International Student Services, the International Club, and ASUP. International Week spans a six day period in February during which there are activities which include: films, speakers, concerts, and food around campus. International Night is the final event of the week during which professional and student musicians, dancers, and martial artists from around the world perform as well as an international cuisine prepared by UP students. If you are interested in becoming involved with International Week and Night please contact International Student Services at iss@up.edu. |
| International Friendship Partners Program |
| The International Friendship Partners Program is designed to encourage friendship and cultural understanding between international and American students. International students who choose to participate in the program will be matched with American participants. Friendship partners will have the opportunity to meet throughout the year in planned group activities and are strongly encouraged to meet one on one as well. The program is suited to various levels of involvement, whether you would like meet your partner a few times a month or a few times a week. Last year program activities included attendance at a Winterhawks’ hockey game, bowling, a potluck dinner where different cuisines were shared, and more. If you would like more information about the program or would like to be matched with a Friendship Partner please contact this year’s program coordinator, Jenna Tanzer at tanzer09@up.edu or International Student Services at iss@up.edu. |
| International Job Club |
|
In collaboration with the Office of Career Services, workshops are offered to international students to meet their specific needs in the U.S. job market. Topics such as resume building, interviewing, and networking are examples of the skills developed during the workshops. International Job Club is held twice a year. For more information, please contact iss@up.edu. If you would like to make an appointment to visit with a career counselor about resume styles and interview techniques, please visit the Office of Career Services. |
| International Health and Service Ambassador |
|
The International Health and Service Ambassador (IHSA) is a peer leader who is a liaison between ISS, the Health Center and international students. International students are encouraged to contact the IHSA about their health, spiritual, and academic concerns. The IHSA will meet with students individually or during planned social activities. Each fall semester the IHSA organizes the Acculturation Banquet to gather students to reflect on their experiences at the University. This year’s IHSA is Cynthia Santoso. If you would like to schedule an appointment to meet with Cynthia, send an email to iss@up.edu. |
| International Orientation |
|
At the beginning of each semester all new international students must attend international student orientation. During the orientation session students will learn about immigration regulations, academic resources available to them on-campus, and meet student leaders from the various programs offered through ISS. Before orientation all new international students at the University are matched with a returning international student mentor. When possible, students are matched by home country and/or major. International short term mentors are available to answer questions about the University, academics, U.S. culture or anything else that may arise during the first few weeks of the semester. For more information about this program contact Michael Pelley, Director of International Student Services (iss@up.edu) |
