University of Portland alumnus Donald T. Galarneau, a 1949 University graduate, has donated $50,000 to the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering for the purchase for a high speed camera. Galarneau’s former employer General Electric Company will match his gift, raising the overall value of his gift to $100,000.Galarneau worked at GE for 35 years as a field engineer. A Portland resident, Galarneau earned a degree in physics at the University and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. His interests at the University of Portland include the engineering and science programs. He often attends University reunions and events and is involved with the local Catholic radio station KBVM.
“We are grateful for the gift of this ultra-high-speed camera, which can be used to enhance both teaching and undergraduate research,” said engineering dean Sharon Jones. “In terms of teaching, a tool like this will help us to show the students visually what we are having them calculate mathematically. For some of our students, this is very beneficial to learning. Essentially, the setup allows us to capture engineering phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.”
UP professors will be able to use the camera in several engineering fields, including fluids, thermodynamics, heat transfer, failure analysis, as well as in elective courses, according to Jones. Among the professors who plan to use the camera are Heather Dillon, Kenneth Lulay, V. Dakshina Murty, and Shazib Vijlee.
